Physical, emotional, psychological, sexual and financial abuse should not be covered up by beautiful things, expensive labels or buried under a prime residential address.  Yet sometimes, it shockingly is.
Cornerstone Woman is a unique not-for-profit organisation that offers women, who are victims of the ongoing and destructive cycles of abuse, the opportunity to make a new start.

FINANCIAL ABUSE

In more than 90% of all intimate-partner violence cases, financial abuse occurs. Victims are prevented from acquiring, using or maintaining any financial resources because the abuser knows well that without any financial resources, their victims can’t leave and survive on their own. It is called the invisible weapon.

THE TOXIC RESULT

Intimate-partner violence kills an average of three women a day and shockingly, it is the leading cause of injury for women ages 20-45 globally. What's more, children witness this abuse which in turn leads to behavioral issues, delinquencies and often results in significant substance abuse and runaway children.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

Intimate-partner violence affects us all. It impacts the local  economy through straining support infrastructures, increasing medical costs, leading to family homelessness, business absenteeism or lack of concentration at work and is now the single largest category of emergency calls received by local police.

HOPE & EDUCATION

The good news is that through awareness and education, victims are finding courage and are calling out for help.  But the truth is that staffing and funding for services, let alone money to help re-establish survivors, is on the decline. Pleas for help from victims often go unheard due to lack of funding and resources.

ABUSE COMES IN A VARIETY OF RATHER UGLY FLAVOURS

Violence against women takes on many forms, but they all represent a violation of human dignity and individual rights. Furthermore, they have lasting consequences for not only the women, but for their families and their communities for many years, even after the abuse has been stopped.

Emotional/Psychological

Emotional abuse includes non-physical behaviors such as threats, insults, constant monitoring or “checking in,” excessive texting, humiliation, intimidation, isolation or stalking.

Sexual

Sexual abuse refers to any action that pressures or coerces someone to do something sexually they don’t want to do. It can include oral sex, rape or restricting access to birth control and condoms.

Physical

Physical abuse is any intentional and unwanted contact with you or something close to your body. Sometimes abusive behavior does not cause pain or even leave a bruise, but it’s still unhealthy.

Financial

Financial abuse can be very subtle. It can include telling you what you can and cannot buy or requiring you to share control of your bank accounts. At no point does someone you are dating have the right to use money or how you spend it to control you.
